New Works On Paper

My first experiences with printmaking have have influenced my process of working with paper. There is a unique way that materials react with the surface that lends multiple layers of detail to my work. Since I no longer work with the caustic chemicals associated with intaglio and other forms of printing, I have shifted my process to achieve similar mark making with other mixed media.

Inaccessible Spaces

Sometimes built forms created with architectural convention limit how people inhabit spaces. These paintings are an exploration of concepts that help me rethink the built environment. For me, the large scale encourages physical interaction with the surface of the canvas, revealing unexpected results. I am able to work with small intimate details, large forms and colors simultaneously. These “studies” provide ample information for me to apply to three-dimensional interpretations and other architectural applications.

Connection | Substrate

Connections and materials are the basis of our environment. Organisms relate to each other at both macro and micro levels. When these connections are severed an imbalance may occur. I am interested in the conditions that arise with the application of industrial insertions into the land. The character of the strata is altered with repeated building and manipulations of the earth. There is a space between the natural and the man-made that reveals itself: interstitial space.

Fragments Revealed

These paintings are created through a process of drawing spontaneously, allowing my mind to conjure images and marks that relate to past experiences. I am not working in a linear process, but more of a spiral that allows influences from multiple sources to react with each other. The end result is one that he has not conceived of prior to starting. This series includes works on paper with graphite, acrylics applied with brayers, and pastels.

A Process of Discovery

Early in life I had a penchant for discovering how things worked and were put together. I rarely utilized the instructions that were included with models and toys. I have always been a visual learner and enjoyed figuring out how things are made. With both my parents being scientists, I approach situations with the idea of discovery.

My childhood memories inform my designs. Whether playing in the prairies with friends, catching lizards and snakes, or backpacking in the mountains with my parents – I have always enjoyed the process of exploration.

Texture and Marks

In this series of paintings I focused on disrupting the surface by both addition and subtraction methods. The substrate is wood and allows me to carve into the surface, creating different levels depending upon the material removed. I also applied plaster and paint to the surface, building up texture and depth.

Works on Panel

When working with wood panels I am able to carve, scratch and cut into the surface. This allows me to emphasize textures and lines beyond the surface of the painting.

Collage | Mixed Media

By utilizing found imagery and personal photos in conjunction with a mixed media palette I am able to loosely configure compositions that reveal personal narratives. Several of these images deal specifically with current political and environmental events.
